So this is the third single of PHASES already. I say "already" but it actually feels like it was recorded a while ago. Maybe because I took a break in early March... The music direction for this track was rather vague: I wanted to write a French song. So basically, there were no restriction stylewise, although having French lyrics would inevitably affect the music - and it did.

The lyrics were written by my friend Pierre Lapointe who's an accomplished singer / songwriter in the francophone music world. You can read more about him here. Pierre accepted to write some lyrics for the song after we had a beer - I remember it was not so long after the wrap-up party for the New Design video. A few days later, he had the text ready for me. I'm going to post it here, just in case some of you would like to try to figure out what it means ;)

reconstruire

In a few words, it's a song about feeling weak, torn in little pieces, about wanting to love someone but not quite being ready for it, because of a previous hurtful relationship, probably. I had told Pierre about the expression "pièces détachées" (detached pieces) that I had in mind for the song so that served him as a starting point. I started writing the music as soon as I received the lyrics.

This is the closest that a Montag track has ever sounded to rock, with (real! heheh) drums, bass and guitar. Each of those were played by different friends, Guillaume Éthier, Dominic Vanchesteing and Phillipe Roberge respectively. Read more about them here. Dominic also helped me with the recording of the vocals.

Here's a picture that Dominic V. took of me in his studio. Don't I kind of look like lab mouse trapped in an aquarium? Or I'm just imagining that... That session was actually a lot of fun. After we had recorded all the vocal parts of "P.I.E.C.E.S.", Dominic played me a demo of his and I made up a vocal line just for fun and 10 minutes later we had a song called "Love is Like Melody". Maybe you'll hear it one day.

SIMPLE ASSEMBLAGE as you might have guessed, is a very simple tune made of assembled synth tones. I like the mood of it actually. Not that it fits particularly well with P.I.E.C.E.S. sound wise, I liked how both tracks complemented each other. Hope you enjoy this one. Very "new-agey", I know. Can't help it when it comes to synths... More of those tracks soon, that's for sure.
