PHASE 10 - MEMORI ??? (featuring Erika Spring)

I've been wanting to work with my friend Erika for a long time. We did once before in the past. It was in 2007. I asked my friends of Au Revoir Simone to sing on a rather happy pop tune called "No One Else". Last time I saw Erika was in fall 2011. I went to NYC with by boyfriend and two other friends. She was working on her solo material and I wasn't really playing any music at the time - I was mainly working on some music contract work. I remember that it made me miss making music a lot, just listening to her stories about going back to the studio, rehearsing songs - even on her own. I felt like I had to get back to. I did, eventually.

My friendship with Erika started in 2006. It was when ARS and I toured together in Japan. We shared the same label there, Rallye Records. It was just one of those surreal trips with the best people in the world. We toured again in Japan in 2007 and it was even better. We just felt so comfortable around each other. I don't think I could ever forget those two trips. Japan is an amazingly welcoming country for musicians but being there with such great people as Annie, Heather and Erika was simply heavenly. So my connection with Erika has something... Japanese about it. The title is ??? which is pronounced "memori" - it means "memory" of course. The title was no easy to find because nothing in the lyrics worked as a title... Not even in the chorus.

MEMORI - AUDIO-DOCUMENTARY

So how we wrote the song was interesting because it came from a series of chords that Erika sent me over Soundcloud. From there, I built a whole song very quickly and the words came to me just as fast. I wanted a song about traveling the world, feeling invicible, about being in different places at once. It is a simple song but I'm happy with it because I feel like it was a real "two-way" collaboration. I think Erika was a little surprised about how fast it was all put together. She recorded her own vocals from her place and sent me the files online. Three days later, it was finished and sent to Carpark.

My friend Simon (James Bay) helped me with the mix of the poppier version, as I was super rushed around the time I had to finish the tune... There is no way I could have finished in time without his help. He also had to work really fast... But I'm glad about the final result - although we could have mixed the song differently with more time of course. But that's the way it goes with Phases... always. I did manage to come up with a more minimal version of the song which ended up being the b-side... It's probably my favorite of the two. It sounds a lot more like the synth snippets that Erika had sent me.

MEMORI ENCORE

Now I'm hoping to have even more versions of the song because I feel like the melody and the mood of it could be interpreted in different ways... So expect a mini-album of remixes by mid-November called "Memorimix"! Stay tuned!
