Here's something new: an audioblog!! Montag's "Audio-Calendar": one song a day... a progressive mixtape that lasts weeks and weeks...! But it only started... a couple of days a ago. Check it out!
Two more Montag remixes were released in the last few weeks: "The Night Beetle" by Australia's Winterpark and "Under Sun" by Japanese band Golf.
Finally, Montag just completed a project called MUTATIONS, as part of OFFTA a Montreal based multi-disciplinary festival and MUTEK last June. Mutations is a soundwalk that explores the relationship between architecture and music: 10 Montreal composers (Poirier, Navet Confit, Jérôme Minière, Alexis O'Hara, etc.) wrote an original sound piece inspired by the architecture of 10 different buildings located in Montreal's Quartier des spectacles. Download or listen to the tracks online on Bande à Part's website (Radio-Canada): MUTATIONS. You can also check out Mutations on Facebook.
The work on the new album will have to wait until June: Montag is curating an ambitious project called MUTATIONS which will take place in Montreal in late May as part of the OFFTA festival. It's basically a soundwalk about experiencing architecture through music. Radio-Canada's Bande à Part will be the official broadcasters and it will be available after its launch. It involves 10 different composers from Montreal: Jérôme Minière, Olivier Alary (Ensemble), Poirier, Simon Besré (Duchess Says) amongst others. More news about this project real soon!
Montag still exists, be reassured. It's been a really long time since I last updated this page. 2010 was a busy one. With music, believe or not, but just music that was "outside of Montag". Which explains why this site was left unchanged for so long. Amongst the projects that I worked on this year, there were 3 sound design works for theatre, a soundtrack for a dance show, an audioguide about this history of modern architecture, two music production gigs, etc.). Despite all that, Montag was not completely inactive last year, far from it:
- in January Des Cassettes & un Walkman jaune was officially (and digitally) released by Canadian label Peppermill Records.
- in March, I am Robot and Proud released a remix album which featured "Something to Write Home About" remixed by Montag.
- in the spring, four exclusive Montag tracks were released on a Lo Recordings compilation destined to licensing for film and television.
- June saw the release of Canadian band Stars' new album, which came as a deluxe edition that included a Montag remix of their unreleased track "The Black House, The Blue Sky".
- in July, Montag's remix of Au Revoir Simone's "Trace a Line" was released on their remix compilation "Night Light".
- in the late summer, two more Montag remixes were recorded. One for Woodpigeon: "Our Love is as Tall as the Calgary Tower" (released in September on an EP of the same name) and the other for I'm From Barcelona: the song is called "Get in Line" and will be their first single taken from their upcoming new LP.
- And finally, a new Montag song called "Luminaire" is now available on Wool Recordings' compilation "Woolly Jumpers" that features bands such as Light Pollution, Lesser Gonzales, Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), etc.
So Montag still exists. That's for sure. I promised myself to go back to music writing (for Montag) in 2011. Another resolution.
In the meantime, I suggest you listen to DEPUIS, a project by Jérôme Bouchard and Éric Le Coguiec for which I made the arrangements and produced the recordings: www.depuis.ca
2010. Already! "Des cassettes et un walkman jaune" is still available as a free download on Bandcamp or you can order it on tape or mini-CD on Thebluehouse.org. As if there hadn't been enough Montag remixes in 2009 (I'm from Barcelona, Boy in Static, Zachary Gray, etc.), nothing indicates that there will be less in 2010, starting with a remix of i am robot and proud, followed by one of The One AM Radio...
Many projects are on the table, including an instrumental release with Zachary Gray and a collaboration with Wood Pigeon. To be continued...
Sorry for the long silence... Here is Montag's latest news at last:
Montag will be back on stage after a short set at this year CMJ (Carpark's 10th Anniversary party). This time it will be in Montreal, at Casa del Popolo on December 19th - with his friend Zachary Gray. A Facebook event will be create for the show very shortly. Stay tuned!
Montag will also release one of those now "traditional" self-released EPs but this time it will a free download from montag.ca : it's basically covers of songs by The Breeders, PM Dawn (!), Low, Unrest and some other surprises...
A compilation called "Winter Blanket" will be released on Lo Recordings (UK) later this winter. It features 4 exclusive Montag compositions (mostly instrumental tracks). More news about this release very very soon!
As for Montag's album, it's progressing but really slowly... Just too much work on other music related projects: after the sound design for two theatre plays this fall, Montag's music will be part of an audio-guide about the history of modern architecture of downtown Montréal (an initiative of DocoMomo Québec). Montag's music will also be heard in 1976, a dance show by Montreal's choreagrapher Dana Michel (the show will be presented at Tangente this winter). But be patient there will be a new Montag album soon.
Montag is going to remix another Au Revoir Simone this month. The song is called "Trace a Line" and is from their latest album "Still Night, Still Light". A link to the remix will be available here once it's done. Two other Montag remixes are now available on Susumo Yokota's latest single which was released on Lo Recordings last April.
Work on the new album is going well. It should finished sometime this fall and we're planning an early 2010 release with Carpark. In the mean time, HIBERNATION is getting a pretty good reviews. You can download it on iTunes and Paper Bag Digital or at www.thebluehouse.org if you're looking for a copy of the 3" CD.
Montag is the guest host on a new special CBC Radio 3 podcast. You can DOWNLOAD the "Spring Electronic Mix" here.
You'll find tracks by Junior Boys, Hexes and Ohs, Donzelle and also a NEW Montag remix(of a track by Zachary Gray called "Perfect Day").
Montag is also putting the final touches to a new song for a British project called "Explorer" which is like a "singles club" - you subscribe to get one mp3 a month for a year... The Montag tune is called "Dream Machine". Demos for the new album are coming along pretty well too... To be continued.
A few things this month: a new Montag remix (again!), this time on Boy in Static's new single entitled "Young San Fransisco". Listen to it on RCRD LBL.
NEW MINI-ALBUM: HIBERNATION will be released on Feb. 17th via Paper Bag Records. It contains 7 tracks + a bonus track that will be available on iTunes and other online stores. No shows are planned to support the release, sorry. More new soon!
First of all, happy new year all! (of course). And for those who sitll wonder if HIBERNATION is the only way to survive the long cold Canadian winters, Toronto's own PAPER BAG DIGITAL (a division of Paper Bag Records) is clear on that matter: the answer is yes. That's why it will be releasing HIBERNATION, Montag's most recent EP on February 17th. It will be available on iTunes and other online stores and will also include an exclusive track and a digital booklet...
There are still a few copies left of the limited edition mini-CD version of the EP on The Blue House.
Another scoop: there will be a new Montag album in 2009.
NEW EP! Human hibernation is the only way you'll survive the winter. Make your provisions now and ORDER a handmade copy of the EP to get the soundtrack of your long wintersleep. Read this article to know more about human hibernation! Also:
NOVEMBER, ALMOST DECEMBER 2008 A lot of things are going on...
First of all: a move to Montréal... after living in Vancouver for three years, I can say that I am VERY happy to be back in my city. I have tons of collaborative projects on the go and most of all, a new album that I just started working on. If everything goes well, there will be a new Montag album out sometime in 2009. I wish it could be done this month but I know it will take a while.
There are plenty of Montag remixes out there and some that will be released soon. Here is the complete list of the most recent ones and their release dates:
AU REVOIR SIMONE - "A Flammable Yet Violent World" - November 15th on their remix album called "Reverse Migration" - that's a very Xmasy one. MIOU MIOU- "À L'été de la Saint-Martin '68" - November 25th on their remix album " Électronique / Mioumixes". Miou Miou is a band from the Czech Republic but all their lyrics are in French. They are signed to Minty Fresh Records... I'M FROM BARCELONA- "Music Killed Me" - Montag actually won their remix competition recently and you can hear the remix on their site, BOY IN STATIC - "Young San Fransisco" - to be released at some point in 2009... THE PRAGMATIC- "Circles" - to be released in 2009 too... SUSUMU YOKOTA - "Love Tendrilises" - to be released also in 2009 on Lo Recordings.
And finally, ALEXANDRE DESILETS (a québécois singer from Montréal) for another remix compilation organized this time by the mighty BANDE À PART on Radio-Canada. There will be a link to the page where you can vote for the Montag remix soon.
4 Montag remixes - There are 4 Montag remixes to be released in the next few weeks.
1) First, the Montag remix of M83's "Kim & Jessie" single is already out since July 22nd (available on iTunes or on Mute's site on 12" vinyl).
Then there is "Opportunity" by You Say Party! We Say Die! who just announced the release of a remix album on Paperbag Records Digital on August 26th. You can listen to the whole Montag remix on YSPWSD's Remik's Cube Myspace page.
The remix for Au Revoir Simone's track "A Violent World Yet Flammable World" will be released on their remix album which is due out sometime in September... More details soon.
4) And finally, the remix for the poppy track 'À l'été de la Saint-Martin" by czech band Miou Miou will come out some time before the end of the summer... if I can finish it first that is.
Collaboration + move - I'm about to collaborate with my good friend Leah Abramson who's putting the final touches to her second album (you can listen to her demo songs on Myspace Myspace). Once the work is over, I'm packing and moving to Montréal that I've missed so much. I thought it'd be silly to start recording a new album before leaving... Can't wait to start doing that.
The remix of M83's "Kim and Jessie" is now done and I'm getting ready to go to Montréal. I'll be working on Sarah Chase's new dance show that will be presented at the Canada Dance Festival in Ottawa. Opening night is on June 11th.
I just listened to the Au Revoir Simone's forthcoming remix album and there's some really exciting things on it (remixes but also covers). One of them is a remix by Darkel (who is Jean-Benoît, more precisely on half of French band Air) and a remix by Pacific! that is so summery, it's nuts. The album will have the same tracklisting as the original one on The Bird of Music. I remixed the track called "A Violent Yet Flammable World". LISTEN TO THE REMIX ON THE POP-UP RADIO!!
The installation of video artist Nelly-Ève Rajotte for which I wrote the music, will be presented at the Galerie L'Oeil de Poisson in Québec City from May 2nd to June 1st as part of the collaborative artistic project L'Oreille dans l'Oeil.
On a more positive note, M83 asked me to remix the song "Kim and Jessie" from his new record "Saturdays = Youth". Apparently, I have to finish it before the end of the month so... stay tuned! I'll be playing with M83 in Montréal on May 31st.
I'm starting work on the new record too which is exciting. I have a hundred titles ideas for it in mind... We'll see where it goes.
Andy Dixon and I just put out our 7" record this week. You can order it on The Blue House (where I also added a few copies of the "Going Places" LP). All the covers are handmade and there are only 300 copies. We're both really excited.
I also finished remix for You Say Party! We Say Die! - it will be out later this year but I don't have a release date yet. More details soon for sure.
A split 7' record called Husbands will be released on Ache Records later this spring. It's the result of a collaboration with my friend Andy Dixon. The covers will be handmade and only 300 copies will be pressed. The record will be sold online on Blue House as soon as we get the copies (date to be confirmed!).
Some concerts are now confirmed in Europe in the second half of April. They're all pretty small shows but they'll be intimate and fun for sure. Please come say hi! Also please note that the merch will be cheaper than usual for those shows as they are the last ones to promote Going Places. You can already buy some tickets for the London show here. There is also a show in Vancouver on March 20th with my friend Andy and his project Secret Mommy! Check it out!
Montag was commissioned to write the music for a dance piece choregraphed by Sarah Chase for Montréal Danse during all of May. The show will premiere at the Canada Dance Festival in Ottawa on June 12th.
First of all, happy new year to anyone who reads this. 2008 will be good. Hopefully.
Just back from a tour with Dan Deacon in the UK, Montag will be playing with his party-animal labelmate on January 21st at Richards on Richards in Vancouver... There will be two shows in Mexico before that too... What else is happening for Montag in 2008... Well, there is an Au Revoir Simone remix to be released sometime in the Spring as well as an exlcusive track on Rallye Records's 5th anniversary compilation... There will also be a few collaborations, with Boy in Static et hexes & ohs amongst others... And maybe a new record if everything goes well. To be continued. Of course.
A second life for Going Places! Montag's latest record will be released in Europe on December 17th. Also some European shows have just confirmed! Hopefully there will be more dates on the list soon... So stay tuned.
Montag's remix of "A Violent Yet Flammable World" by Au Revoir Simone will be released some time this winter on a ARS remix record - with remixes by Hot Chip, Architecture in Helsinki, etc. The date will be confirmed soon...
Also, "Safe in Sound" by Montag was featured in last week's CBC Radio 3 podcast. Click the link to listen to it. -

Hello Mexico! Two Montag shows have just been confirmed for November. We're trying to organize a micro-tour in Europe with Carpark and other friends... For those who live around Vancouver, BC, there will be an intimate CD launch party (no there has not even been one yet!) that's also a fundraiser for local theatre company Horseshoe and Hand Grenade: September 21st, 8pm – 11pm - Mindy & David’s Place - 2439 Trinity Street - $10 at the door – please book as limited space available - by email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
+ Back from Japan after a wonderful 7 date tour with Yacht
and Au Revoir
Simone (you should read Yacht's
blog to know all about it). It was just amazing, nothing less. Also
had a great time with Miracle Fortress - we crossed the continent and
that is a lot of kilometers believe me - we even played in Thunder Bay
(was a great show too!). There's a lot coming up too: a full US tour was
just confirmed with The One AM Radio and Lymbyc Systym starting August
14th in Los Angeles... Check out the concert
page for all the dates. There are also 2 remixes on the way - one for
Au Revoir Simone and Blitzer Trapper... But first, a few days off!
+ There will be a tour EP available at shows: here's the (mini-CD) cover
and the tracklisting:
1. Le Super-flash bang statement
2. Safe in Sound (Lullatone remix)
3. Le Musée National des bonheurs qui ne durent pas
4. Cross the river
5. Nord sud est ouest
6. Alice (Boy in Static remix)
7. Gong Places
+ SO MANY THINGS GOING ON... - First, a new Montag album
- Going Places - will be out on May 19th
in Japan on Rallye
Records and on June 5th everywhere else thanks to Carpark
Records. Also, my friend Andy
Dixon has been working a little teaser video for the new album, etc.
It should be online (you can guess where) in about 10 days...
There'll be a CD release party in Montréal on May 31st (at the
Main Hall) with my friends from Natacha's
Recordings: Massive Asthma and Le Peuplier de Simon.
There's also a full Canadian tour
coming up with Miracle Fortress (Secret City Records). Then it's a Japanese
tour with Au Revoir Simone and YACHT. We're hoping to confirm a full
US tour with The One AM RAdio and Lymbyc Systym in the next couple of
weeks. More news very soon!
+ A NEW SONG FOR SPRINGTIME, LOTS OF SHOWS - Here's
a new silly Montag song for Springtime on Vancouver's own Peppermill
Records spring compilation. You're lucky the lyrics are in French
because they're pretty silly - it's basically about global warming vs.
the season of love or something like that. The deal is that the artists
invited to participate have to write a song in less than a week... pretty
fun. You can check their calendar to see who's tracks will be posted next!
+ A lot of Montag shows will be confirmed soon - mainly in Canada. Stay
REMIX FOR STARS - Montag did a remix for Stars a while ago and it's finally going to be available on the Stars remix
compilation called "Do You Trust Your Friends?" - which will
be released on Arts and Crafts on May 22nd. Here is the link to the news
FIRST SHOW IN A LONG TIME - Montag will be opening for the Junior
Boys @ Richards on Richards (Vancouver) on April 22nd. The record
won't be out yet but there'll be a self released EP available there...
More info soon.
NEW ALBUM - Montag's new record is now finished. Sixtoo did
the mastering in Montreal and we're pretty happy with the final result.
Here is the final track listing and the names of all the collaborators:
